Peter is a wonderful character. I don't love him, per say, but I think he is a complex character who is intriguing and has a lot of possibility. And one thing I know for certain is that his part in the story is not over. He will have a major role to play in this sage. (I have the first few minutes of FoTR running through my head, can you tell.)
He cannot be dismissed outright. You don't get the whole scope of his personality if you take one look at him, decided he's scum for betray Lily and James, and hate him forever. It just doesn't work. And Peter can't be left out of MWPP fics. If he wasn’t close to James and Lily (i.e. a close friend of theirs) then he would have never been entrusted with their life.
