What do you think was on Peter's mind when he gave Voldemort the Potters?

A great many curse words which I can't post here, as this is a family forum. *gryn* I agree with Ani that this was probably the single worst moment of Peter's life, the moment when he realized he was in too far over his head and there was no going back. Panic, horror, self-loathing...and perhaps, deep down, a little bit of relief that he was still alive despite everything, which only made everything else worsee.

Where as those who just think Peter's a stupid little whiny coward for behaving the way he does around Voldemort have probably never been terrified out of their wits before.

Amen to that! So irritating. It was a bloody war situation; people were getting killed right and left, terrorism attacks all over, chaos and fear dominating everything. How many of us know what that's like? How many of us know how we ourselves would act, growing up in such situations?

I don't like what Peter did, but my first and foremost reaction is Walk a mile in their shoes before you condemn them utterly. And I still say he's got future-redemption written all over him. If Vader could redeem himself, why not Peter?
Seeing Peter really hits us on the head with the sort of evil of which Voldemort is capable. This is not some demon that you thwack with a sword until he dies or you do; this is someone who can break you into pieces. That's scary. Voldemort would be much less scary if we didn't have Peter as an example of all the worst that can happen

And what about the relationship between MWP and Pete? Do you get PO'ed when Peter is treated as an inferior? Do you think he was an equal? Do you think he was a superior? Or do you really think he was an inferior? ...And what do you see in Peter's Animagi? I think he became a rat to sneak into small places et cetera, but what's your opinion? Was it fitting his later ratlike demeanor? Was JK really trying to show something or was she trying to make us think she was trying to show something? What is there so important about this form? Can the Animagi potion (assuming perhaps wrongly that they do not pick their animals) predict the future? --Or has Peter been "ratlike" all along?

1) There IS no MWPP without the W!
2) Yes!
3) Yes!

...okay, abandoning list method of posting now...

Anyways. I definitely see Peter as an equal part of MWPP. Yep, he goes evil later; happens to the best of us. I in no way forgive or condone Peter's actions, I just try to explain them and to show what he was like before hand. I firmly believe it's possible to love pre-betrayal Peter and still hate what he does. It wouldn't be much of a betrayal if it was done by somebody we didn't care about, ne?

The trick is to make him likeable while at the same time giving character flaws that can cascade into disaster given the right circumstances...it's not as impossible as it seems. The human psyche is a strange, treacherous thing.

As for the animagus, I do think you choose what creature you turn into; otherwise all the various forms would just be too convienent, most particularly Rita Skeeter's beetle. My bet is that MWPP needed a scout, and that Peter's preference was for an animal that would be inconscpicuous and could hide easily. As for what the fact that it's a rat symbolizes...we've already discussed the mishappened stereotypes about rats, so I won't rehash that. But, I wouldn't be surprised if JKR was thinking of the stereotype herself; she inserts such puns and things all over the place in her books. "Only a true Gryffindor could have pulled that out of his hat" indeed.

That's always been a sore point of mine. Yep, Peter is described as overweight in GoF. Or rather, as being skinny in the manner of someone who has lost a *lot* of weight recently. But fer cryin' out loud! He's been a pet rat for *ten years*. Pets weigh more than normal animals; this is a commonplace thing. At no point is it stated that Peter must have been overweight during school as well.

I guess it just irks me that his being overweight is added to the general stigma against Peter. He's a traitor, he wasn't that magically talented, and he was overweight, as if that in any way relates. Bah humbug, say I.

First of all, I definitely think Peter is going to switch sides again at a crucial moment somewhere; there's been foreshadowing to that effect. I think the name of the guy you're trying to remember from The Black Cauldron is Adaon, or something; had five letters and started with A.

Second, to whoever said that Peter must be a pureblood wizard or else the Death Eaters wouldn't have allowed in him into the ranks; au contraire. Peter's recruitment was phenominally helpful to Voldemort's cause; even before his betrayal of the Fidelius Charm, he was a trusted friend of the good guys and thus an excellent spy. Voldemort is far too intelligent to not use Peter in anyway possible, particularly given his access to information about the Potters. (though only JKR knows why he wanted the Potters dead, and man do I hope she answers that question soon) So he could have been Muggle born.

Third, as for why Peter turned...I'd guess a couple of reasons. First, that suddenly there was no one to protect him. I don't mean to imply that he was a wimp, just that for nearly anyone the period after graduation is a rather frighteningly confused and lonely time, and perhaps he took it harder than most. James was certainly distracted by Lily; perhaps Sirius and Remus were off doing something and Peter was, for the first time in years, left alone. I'm curious to know if it was Voldemort who recruited Peter or Peter who sought out Voldemort.

Fourth, I'm inclined to agree that Sirius was rather bitter (justifiably) when he said that Peter never did anything without self-interest. Perhaps that was so, but he could just have easily been exagerrating. Hard to say.

Anyways. I guess I count myself in with Peter fans. Mostly it's that I adore Prongs, Padfoot, and Moony, and have faith that anybody they spent years running around causing mayhem with had to be just as nifty as they. The three of them are all too intelligent and spiffy to hang around with some random stupid git. Peter must have been just as interesting and intelligent in his own right.

And Narcissa, regarding what you just said about hating to see a competent Peter: Amen to that!! Evil and awful as his actions that night were, nobody can deny that it tactically they were brilliant, especially for something that must have been thought of on short notice. Yikes!!

Personally I see Peter as having been very good with numbers, and particularly good at Arithmancy, Astronomy, Ancient Runes, the sorts of classes that are about magical knowledge rather than ability. Just because he doesn't have much magic talent doesn't mean he wasn't intelligent. Look at Neville, he hasn't got much magic talent either. (unless you're one of those who believes his inability masks a great ability, which I think would be great, but that's an argument for another thread)
